The Bible

The Bible

The Bible is a vital component of our Christian walk and worship and its importance is reflected in the diocese by the Bishop’s Certificate Course and the annual Bible Week.

You will also find the Daily Bible Readings from the Church of Ireland Lectionary below the gallery on our homepage.

There are many Bible reading plans and commentaries available.

An online opportunity popular with mobile users is Word Live from Scripture Union.

Visit Biblefresh for many more resources.

Bishop’s Certificate Course

The two–year Bishop’s Certificate Course facilitates individuals in a deeper study of Scripture and may challenge them to develop a calling or ministry.

The course runs on one evening each week for seven weeks per term over three terms and those who successfully complete both years receive a certificate signed by Bishop Harold.

Topics covered include: Why is the Bible so important?; How did the Bible come to us?; Why is the nation of Israel so important?; What we can understand of the God of the Bible?; Who is Jesus?; What is the message of the four gospels?; What does St. Paul tell us?; and much more.

  • The classes are relaxed and interactive (and include a coffee break!)
  • There is some coursework but it is not onerous and is chiefly for your benefit
  • There is secure parking at Church House

The course is organised and taught by Canon Robert Neill, Rector of Drumbo and takes place in Church House, Donegall Street, Belfast.

Please note that the current course is full and the next intake will not be before October 2017.

Annual Bible Week

To date, the Diocese of Down and Dromore has held 9 Bible Weeks which traditionally take place in the week running up to the first Sunday in September.

The Bible Week offers four evenings of encouragement as parishes prepare for the busy autumn term – encouragement from the Word of God speaking into our lives; encouragement in worship and encouragement in simply being together. Prayer ministry is also made available every night.

Our first 8 speakers have come from different corners of the Anglican Communion but in 2015 we welcomed David Parker, Senior Pastor of the Desert Vineyard Church in California and our speaker in 2016 is Revd Dr Ian Provan who was ordained in the Church of Scotland.

Next year’s Bible Week will take place from Tuesday 30 August to Friday 2 September 2016. Venue to be announced.
