It was with shock and sadness that I heard of Thursday's tragedy at Cork International Airport. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of all those involved and I offer my sincere condolences to those who have lost loved ones.

There is no doubt that the prompt actions of the emergency services saved lives and I commend them for their dedication and professionalism in the midst of such a crisis.

A parishioner from my own diocese, Mrs Heather Elliott from Knockbreda Parish, was one of the survivors.  Although deeply shocked, I understand that Heather is comfortable and we are thankful that she is expected to make a full recovery.

I spent nearly 8 years as a rector in County Cork and knew her parents. The late Revd Oliver Peare was a former rector of Kinsale and Heather was on her way to visit her mother for the weekend when tragedy struck.

I am certain that the injured and bereaved will receive only the best care and love from the people of Cork and we in the diocese of Down and Dromore assure them of our prayers.
