Knockbreda parishioner survives plane crash

Mrs Heather Elliott, MU Branch Leader in Knockbreda Parish, had a miraculous escape on Thursday when she escaped relatively unharmed from the plane crash that killed six people at Cork Airport.

Kinsale-born Heather was seated near the wing of the turbo prop aircraft, which crash-landed on a runway in dense fog yesterday morning, after overturning and catching fire while making its third attempt to land. The emergency services were quickly on the scene and managed to extinguish the fire before it spread to the cabin.

Heather, in her 40s, is a married mother-of-three and has lived in Belfast for many years. She is being treated at Cork University Hospital.

'Although deeply shocked, I understand that Heather is comfortable and we are thankful that she is expected to make a full recovery,' said Bishop Harold.

'I spent nearly 8 years as a rector in County Cork and knew her parents. The late Revd Oliver Peare was a former rector of Kinsale and Heather was on her way to visit her mother for the weekend when tragedy struck.

He continued: 'I am certain that the injured and bereaved will receive only the best care and love from the people of Cork and we in the diocese of Down and Dromore assure them of our prayers.'
