New spirituality programme for men

Quest for the Male Soul is a programme written by Martin McAlinden and Jonny Watson five years ago. In their respective work fields, Martin a Parish Priest and Jonny a Social Worker they became aware and challenged about how we lived in an age where ‘being a man’ seemed increasingly difficult.

They identified how men were not being helped to articulate their concerns, feelings and frustrations and needed guidance and a context in which to do this safely. For all the public health initiatives to raise the profile of mental health issues amongst men, research continued to highlight shockingly high rates of suicide, anxiety and depression for men compared to women.

The eight–session programme is highly experiential and deliberately different from lectures or workshops which men may be used to. It attempts to engage participants at a more soulful level, through story–telling, film, teaching and deep–sharing. The content draws from Christian spirituality, theology and relevant psychology. It is underpinned by the example and teachings of Jesus and the Christian faith.

What has developed out of the course has been an ongoing men’s monthly meeting. This meeting is a safe environment where men, regardless of background or denomination, can continue to share, support and learn from each other. One of the regular men recently described it as an “oasis for men to meet in the middle of a busy month.”
