The cathedral stands prominently on the Hill of Down, overlooking the ancient and historic town of Downpatrick.
It is a special place steeped in history and prayer. Tradition holds that Patrick was buried on the Hill of Down and for over 1600 years Christians have worshipped on this site. They still do.
With a host of fascinating features to see both inside and out, Down Cathedral is one of the destinations on St Patrick’s Trail and well worth a visit for pilgrims and tourists alike.
Down Cathedral has an important place in the life and worship of the diocese. Each year it provides the focus for the St Patrick’s Day celebrations and is often used for ordination services. The Cathedral is also part of the Lecale Group of churches and services are held there on Sundays in accordance with the pattern for worship in the group. There is also a regular Thursday morning service of prayer and a monthly evensong.
The cathedral has a shop and toilet facilities and there is ample parking nearby.
In the cathedral graveyard, a large Mourne granite slab marks the traditional burial place of St Patrick. A wreath is laid there each St Patrick’s Day.
A replica 8th century St Patrick’s High Cross faces the west door, original stone fragments of which are housed in the entrance porch. We invite you to place your hand in the imprint on the base and pray.
Down Cathedral is part of the Lecale Area Mission Partnership (LAMP).
Down Cathedral is in the centre of Downpatrick, at the top of English Street and is very well signposted.
