A key year in the life of Dollingstown

December 2005 was a high point for the parish of Magheralin. Local clergy, parishioners, members of other denominations, and the Mayor and Mayoress of Craigavon gathered in the village of Dollingstown, which forms part of the parish of Magheralin, to witness the opening of a brand new church - St Saviour’s. The Church of Ireland has had a presence in Dollingstown for almost 100 years but recent population movement together with increased church membership created the need for a new church building.

The rector of Magheralin, the Revd Gareth Harron said: “We are delighted to be opening such a modern contemporary building in the heart of this community dedicated to the glory of God and the life-changing message of Christ. We look forward to seeing this building being used throughout the week – not just on Sunday – for the good of everyone in the community.”

The new modern contemporary building can accommodate 350 people and a week of special events followed the opening.

Bishop Harold, who consecrated the new building said it was a joy and rare privilege to be present at the opening of such a beautiful new church. One of the invited guests later said: “This is the first time I have been to the consecration of a new church and I found the service very moving. It was really encouraging to share in the enthusiasm and excitement of the congregation.”
