John Stott comes to Belfast

John Stott, who is a much loved and respected Bible teacher and author will be in Belfast on Saturday 3rd June to speak on ‘Church Growth with Depth: the cost of discipleship. The venue is Assembly Hall, Spires Conference Centre in Belfast with a start time of 7.30pm. The Assembly Hall can seat 1,000 people and admission is free.

He will be accompanied by Chris Wright the International Ministries Director of the Langham Partnership International. Chris, who will be introducing the work of the Langham Partnership, was born and grew up in Belfast and started his career as a teacher in Grosvernor High School before being ordained in the Anglican Church of England.

One of Dr Stott’s best known works is Basic Christianity, which has sold some two million copies and has been translated into at least 60 languages. Other best selling titles include Christian Basics: Belief and Behaviour; Favourite Psalms; The Birds our Teachers and Men with a Message. He is also editor of The Bible Speaks Today series. His first publication was the Bishop of London’s annual Lent book which he wrote in 1954. Now 52 years later he has written some 40 books, not to mention literally hundreds of other articles of Christian literature.

John Stott has attended All Souls, Langham Place since boyhood and became assistant curate there in 1945, then rector in 1950, and now as rector emeritus still preaches there. He saw parish visiting and community work as priorities - even spending time sleeping rough on the streets to find out what it was like to be homeless!

Billy Graham says of him: “he is the most respected clergyman in the world”. This world figure is the founder and honorary president of the Langham Partnership, which has three ministries: to raise the standards of preaching through books, through scholarships and through Langham Preaching seminars.

His involvement in other areas of ministry are too numerous to mention, but any list would include: founding The London Institute for Contemporary Christianity; chair of the Church of England Evangelical Council; president of Universities and Colleges Christian Fellowship; chaplain to the Queen; a former president of Tearfund, chair of Scripture Union and also Evangelical Alliance; vice president of the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students and chair of the Lausanne Theology and Education Group.
