Places of Worship 2006 Awards

Awards for Well-Maintained Places of Worship are being offered by the Ulster Historic Churches Trust. The Trust founded in 1995 has Church of Ireland, Catholic, Presbyterian and Methodist trustees and promotes a wider understanding of Ulster’s historic churches and disseminates information on how best to maintain them.

The awards will be in three categories:

• Places of Worship built before 1800

• Places of Worship built 1800-1900

• Places of Worship built 1900-1975

An award of £1,000 will be made in each of the above categories.

Apply by letter and include the following:

1. The name and location of the place of worship with contact details of the key holder. Include a sketch map if appropriate.

2. A recent photograph of the exterior

3. The (approx) date of the building and of any major alterations

4. A brief indication of the history of the building

(in 200 words or less)

5. A brief indication of how the building is maintained

(in 200 words or less)

6. Any other information you may wish to add to support your application

(in 200 words or less)

Applications should be addressed to: Mrs Jill Kerry, Ulster Historic Churches Awards, 23 King’s Brae, Belfast BT5 7ER. Closing date for applications is Friday 30th June 2006. The winners will be announced in October 2006 and the awards will be made in a ceremony hosted by UTV.

Judging: The Ulster Historic Churches Trust will appoint judges with a background in architectural conservation, including one or more of the trustees and advisers of the Trust. The judges’ decision will be final.
