We will remember them

This Sunday, 12th November, is Remembrance Sunday and many churches across the province will be having services to remember those who sacrificed their lives in wars and conflicts in order that we can enjoy peace and freedom today.

A new Order of Service for Remembrance Sunday was produced in 2006 in consultation between Churches Together in Britain and Ireland and the Royal British Legion.  The new Service is designed to be simpler, more straightforward and more inclusive.

Remembrance Sunday is generally held on the Sunday nearest the 11th November.  The peace treaty - or armistice - to mark the end of World War One was signed at 11am on 11th November 1918.   Every year since then, at the same time on the same day, a two minute silence is held to remember the war dead. This is called Armistice Day.  Recently researchers for the Royal British Legion surveyed 1,500 adults and found that 85% of the population think that the Two Minute Silence is still relevant today.

The traditional Red Poppy Appeal has a new dimension this year reaching out to a new generation of doners.  The Royal British Legion is offering a poppy icon download to mobile phone users in return for a donation of £1.50.  There are three downloads to choose from - animated or static versions.  Each features the Poppy icon with the words ‘Remember'.  Each downloaded version comes with a text reminder to the mobile phone user asking them to observe the two minute silence on the 11th November at 11.00am.  All that's needed for a download is to text the word POPPY to 85099 on your mobile phone and follow the instructions.
