Father Nigel revisits Belfast

At midnight, on Wednesday 31st July 2007, the British Army's support role for Northern Ireland's police service comes to an end, some 38 years later.  At the outset in August 1969, what was then thought to be an operation that would last only a few weeks, lasted for nearly four decades.

Of the 27,000 soldiers who served in Northern Ireland there was one young 18 year old Royal Marine who found himself on the streets of Belfast in 1971.  He returned to Belfast in June this year to speak at our Diocesan Synod in Moira and he had a powerful story to tell of his experiences in Northern Ireland and beyond.  That young Marine was Father Nigel Mumford who is now the Director at The Oratory of Christ the Healer at Christ the King Spiritual Life Centre in our link diocese of Albany diocese.

On his return to the US Father Nigel wrote an article for ‘Sharing' magazine for the Order of St Luke and has kindly given permission for us to use the article on this website.
