Super sized cake!

On 11th November 1907, the largest cake ever baked in Portadown was on view during Seagoe's Harvest services.   After the services it was later served at a Harvest Tea.  Now, in 2007, and thanks to Irwin's Bakery, Seagoe Parish will have a replica of the cake displayed during their Harvest celebrations on Sunday 14th October.

Following the evening service everyone will be invited to a Harvest Supper and to sample some of the 2007 Harvest Cake.  To lend atmosphere those attending are being encouraged to come dressed in period costume!  The Harvest services will be held at 9.15am (Harvest Holy Communion); 10.30am (Harvest Thanksgiving) and at 7.00pm (Harvest Songs of Praise).

The idea to re create the cake came from a picture of the 1907cake, with the following text, which was found in an old cookery book.

SEAGOE HARVEST CAKE

‘Seagoe Harvest Cake, the largest cake ever baked in Portadown was made by Messrs Davison & Co of the Alexandra Bakery, Portadown, for the Seagoe Harvest Tea, which was held in Seagoe School on Monday, November 11th, 1907.  The cake measured 2½ feet in diameter, was 1 foot in depth and was 2½ feet in circumference.  On the top of it the names of the 29 Townlands of Seagoe Parish were tricked out in coloured sugar, and in the centre there was a raised representation in sugar of  Seagoe Parish Church, with the name ‘Seagoe' in large letters.  The cake was heavily iced and sugared and very rich in quality, and was decorated with harvest emblems of corn, fruit and flowers.  Large crowds viewed it when it was exhibited in the town.'
