St Mary's Comber re-opens

After twelve months of extensive construction and renovation works to the structure of St. Mary's Parish Church, Comber the congregation returned to worship in the newly transepted building on Sunday 14th September.

The building, which was unsuitable for worship since Harvest Sunday in September 2007, has been extensively restored, with the culmination of the building work being the construction of a South Transept to provide disabled access to the building. Other work has included the repainting and rewiring of the entire building - to provide safer modern lighting, and to reduce the Church's carbon footprint through efficient, energy-saving technology - the reflooring of the nave and transepts to improve illumination in the church, restaining of all of the pews, and various adjustments to the church layout to improve disabled access.

Two new stained glass windows have been designed by David Esler, of Leadlines (Belfast). The first of which has already been installed in the new transept, and the second larger window will be installed before Christmas. The project has also involved the restoration of the prized Dorcas window, which will be reinstated in the eastern wall of the new transept.
