Bishop Harold to chair seminar at 'Right Move' Career Conference

‘The Right Move' Careers Conference Asks Young People ‘What Does Success Mean For You?'

An innovative new conference addressing the wide range of possibilities for vocational careers is to be held on Tuesday 14 October 2008 at the Whitla Hall at Queen's University, Belfast. The aim of ‘The Right Move Conference' is to equip young people facing challenging career decisions and share some of the excitement of embracing a vision of the future which integrates life, work and faith.

The event will be opened by Dr Aideen McGinley, Permanent Secretary for the Department of Employment and Learning (DEL) and guest speakers include James Featherby of Slaughter and May, one of the world's leading legal practices based in the City of London; Michael Wardlow, Director of the Northern Ireland Council for Integrated Education; the Rt Revd Harold Miller, Bishop of Down & Dromore; and cognitive behavioral therapist Dr Maria Kee. The full programme extends from 10am to 4pm with a lunchtime concert featuring popular singer/songwriter Brian Houston.

The day will also include a range of seminars dealing with topics such as ‘discovering your true strengths', ‘examining the value and pitfalls of a gap year' and ‘dealing with destiny and God's plan'. Panel discussions will provide opportunities to learn from the experience of a wide variety of people sharing what their own sense of ‘call' has meant in different situations. Over 20 organisations and agencies will be exhibiting at the conference, providing information on training and short-term service opportunities.

Bishop Harold will chair a seminar entitled "Natural born 'Church' leader". The media have at times reported a crisis of leadership amongst Churches as the numbers of those going forward to 'ordination' has dropped over the past 10 years or so. Find out what the real truth is about a 'calling' to church leadership, where the institutional Church will be in aonther 10 years time and the partiuclar experiences of a number of 'young' and 'seasoned' clergy, including;

  • Fr Ciaran Dallat (PP of Oldpark Parish, North Belfast)

  • Rev Adrian McCartney (Wells C of I Church plant)

  • Pastor Andy McCourt (AOB, Church in L'Derry)

Young people from schools across Northern Ireland and further afield are invited to explore the link between faith and work and to think about whether they are aiming simply to make a living or to make a difference.  Michael Wardlow says, ‘The conference gives young people a fantastic opportunity to consider what it is they are being educated for and how their strengths and passion may be directed into activities that are truly satisfying.'
