Prime Minister lobbied on climate change

Bishop Harold had an important appointment on the front steps of Parliament Building, Stormont recently. He met Jeffrey Donaldson, MP for Lagan Valley, with representatives from Christian Aid and Tearfund to hand over 1,309 climate change campaign postcards, which the MP passed on to the Prime Minister. The event was part of the build- up to the current UN climate talks which Gordon Brown will attend.

The postcards were signed by young people taking part in the Summer Madness festival, which took place in July at the King’s Hall in Belfast. Bishop Harold led the service at which the postcards were signed and Mr Donaldson also took part in events at the festival.

Both Christian Aid and Tearfund are calling on the Prime Minister to ensure that rich countries cut their carbon emissions by 40% by 2020 and help pay for poor countries to adapt to the affects of climate change. David Thomas, Christian Aid’s Education and Campaigns Coordinator said, “Poor countries are already facing some of the worst effects of climate change and yet have done the least to cause the problem.”

Delegates from 192 countries have descended on Copenhagen for two weeks of talks aimed at paving the way for a new global treaty on climate change. Some have called it the most important world summit ever held.
