Coffee morning for Haiti

Church House Belfast hosted an enjoyable coffee morning and cake sale on 12 August with proceeds supporting the work of the NGO Haven which builds homes and works on sustainable developments in Haiti. The country was devastated by a massive earthquake earlier this year leaving 1.3m people homeless.

The event raised approximately £500, which will support Neil Patterson, son of Archdeacon Philip Patterson, in joining with 600 volunteers leaving Dublin for a 'build it' week in October, part of a programme aiming to build 10,000 houses.

Neil, a volunteer labourer, sent thanks to everyone who supported the event, saying that Haven was ‘very focused on ensuring ... money is used on the ground in Haiti’. Archdeacon Patterson commented, ‘Neil has worked in telecommunications in Dublin for the past ten years and in the course of travelling widely with work has seen real situations of poverty. As a result, he has volunteered with Haven and afterwards is taking up a work placement with VSO – we are delighted he is "giving something back".’
