Our Bible Week speaker

Our speaker at the 2010 Bishop's Bible Week is Canon Dr Christina Baxter. She is lay chair of the Church of England's General Synod, a member of the Archbishop’s Council and Principal of St John’s College, Nottingham. Christina was honoured recently by the Queen with a CBE for her work for the Church of England.

Born in Sevenoaks, Kent, she read theology at Durham and gained her Post Graduate Certificate in Education at Bristol. Following a spell as a teacher, Christina returned to Durham and St John’s College as a part-time tutor, coupled with a Durham Research Studentship. In 1979 she moved to

St John’s College, Nottingham

as a lecturer in systematic theology and was a contemporary of Bishop Harold’s. She became Dean in 1988 and Principal in 1997. Christina gained her PhD from Durham based on her research into the writings of Karl Barth. She has also written one of the Archbishop of Canterbury's Lent books.

Christina has been a Reader since 1971 in three different dioceses and became a Lay Canon of Southwell Minster in 2000. She is active in her local parishes of Awsworth and Cossall in Southwell Diocese.

In her spare time she enjoys swimming, gardening and walking.

Bishop Harold, who counts her as a personal friend, describes Christina as "a wonderful godly woman and Bible teacher... who will give of herself in ministry to us and I know you will be blessed greatly by what she has to say."
