Church of Ireland book launched in the north

The Down and Dromore Youth Council recently held a reception in the Good Book Shop to mark the northern launch of, "Church of Ireland: Origins, History and Present Day Practice" by Andrew Brannigan.

Family, DDYC members, colleagues and collaborators gathered in Church House to celebrate the book's initial success after it was warmly received at the General Synod in Dublin. It has also become the best selling book in the Good Book Shop.

The Down and Dromore Diocesan Youth Officer put pen to paper because he realised that, “Amongst our youth there is a growing lack of understanding of our church - of where it has come from and what it is about today. I wanted to help inform young people but also encourage them in the part they can play in it.”

The book explains the structures, theology and practice of the Church of Ireland in a simple and appealing way with lots of engaging illustrations, interesting trivia and photographs. Many clergy already have a free copy, but DDYC is keen that it makes its way into the hands of young people in the church.

“We’d love to encourage parishes to use this little book with their youth fellowships and confirmation groups,” remarked Martin Montgomery, DDYC member and Youth Worker in Seapatrick Parish, Banbridge. “We believe it will help them gain a deeper appreciation of the Church of Ireland and encourage their sense of belonging. It will also explain why we do what we do on a Sunday!”

One young reader in Belfast certainly gave it the thumbs up. Dorothy McDowell, aged 12, said that, “If you were interested in the church or wanted to know more about it this would be the first book you’d look for.”

Please contact Andrew for further copies at £3 (Euro4) each.
