Jose Enriquez speaks at Dollingstown Men's Breakfast

Two hundred and twenty people turned out to hear rescued Chilean miner, Jose Henriquez, share his story at a men's breakfast event in Dollingstown on Saturday.

SAMS Ireland's Denis Johnston introduced Reverend Alfredo Cooper, chaplain to the President of Chile, who told some of the story and then interviewed and translated for Jose. The interview was interspersed with video footage.

Jose told the assembled men of their dire initial assessment of the situation after the incident and of their survival in the early days on rations of two mouthfuls of tuna fish and half a cup of milk every two days. The food had been stored in an emergency shelter.

He went on to describe making contact with the surface and the way in which they felt sustained by the word of God

The message of rescue which was emphasised as a spiritual challenge to all.

Rector of Magheralin and Dollingstown, Revd Gareth Harron, was encouraged by the turnout which drew about 100 extra men.

"It was a great opportunity to share a message of hope and a privilege to hear the story from one of the survivors," he said.

Jose went on from Dollingstown to Shankill Parish where he spoke to a thousand people at the morning service. Click here to read more.
