Food inflation: Poverty Report comes at opportune time

Many people are watching what they spend right now - but some working families are struggling to feed themselves, because they have next to no cash left after paying household bills.

Increasing numbers of low income working people are turning to charity for help feeding their families. Trussell Trust Foodbanks, which are featured in our upcoming Bishop's Poverty Report, have seen a 50% rise in people needing help.

The report comes at an opportune time as, according to a study released on 14th June by the Institute for Fiscal Studies, people on low incomes have suffered higher inflation than those on higher incomes in the past decade.

The IFS said the difference in fortunes had been particularly marked since 2008, and pensioners on state benefits had been especially hard hit.

People on lower incomes spend a higher proportion of their money on gas, electricity and food, the cost of which has risen sharply, while those on higher incomes have benefited more from lower mortgage rates.

'On Our Doorstep, the Report of the Bishop's Poverty Think Tank, will be launched at the Diocesan Synod on 28th June.
