Archbishop of Armagh congratulates the new Irish President

From The Most Revd Alan Harper, OBE, Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland:

I warmly congratulate Mr Michael D. Higgins on his election as President of Ireland. The people of the Republic have conferred on him both a great honour and a great responsibility at a crucial moment in the history of Ireland.

Mr Higgins follows in the footsteps of distinguished predecessors, not least President Mary McAleese, who stands high in the affection of men and women in every part of Ireland for her contribution to peace and understanding, her personal warmth and openness, and her embodiment of an attitude of respect and parity of esteem for all sections of society. I not only wish Mr Higgins well as he prepares to take up his new responsibilities but also look forward to the unveiling of the particular insights and special personal gifts he will bring to the discharge of the office of President.
