More than bread…Kenya

The drought in the Horn of Africa has largely faded from the international media but the Bible Society of Kenya (BSK) has by no means forgotten the people who are still suffering. It recently distributed food and Bibles in one of the most badly affected areas.

“On September 21 we travelled to Loroo, in central Turkana,” says BSK General Secretary Elizabeth Muriuki. “This area is very dry and the people living there are facing great hardship. Christianity is just starting to become established there, although progress is slow.”

Collaborating with the Africa Inland Church, the BSK team was able to supply 500 families with food packs. It had Bibles available, too, although few people in this community can read. This is a very traditional area where only a handful of people are able to read God’s Word to others. “As well as meeting people’s immediate needs arising from the drought, there is a great need for literacy work here,” said Elizabeth Muriuki.

Please pray for the BSK team as they continue reaching out to people worst affected by the drought conditions. Pray too as they see firsthand how difficult it is for people who cannot read to access Scripture. May they see a clear way ahead for the future, whether through literacy classes or Bible listening groups, so that many people who know nothing of Christ may soon read about and hear His wonderful name.
