One Percent Appeal – please give

Bishop Harold writes, reminding parishes in the diocese to give to the One Percent Appeal:

This is the third year of the 1% Cathedrals Appeal and I would wish to draw it to your attention once more.

This appeal, though small, is vitally important for the development of our two beloved Cathedrals in Down & Dromore. Although the focus of the appeal is on Down Cathedral at the moment, one third of the income is set aside for future development in Dromore Cathedral.

You may have seen the fantastic work done on the Narthex in Downpatrick. The work  was completed without recourse to the Down Cathedral Restoration Appeal, thanks to a Northern Ireland Tourist Board Grant as part of the St Patrick’s Signature Project. There is, however, no external grant available for the next stage of the work, so funding is dependent on the support of the worshipping communities across the diocese.

Phase 2 will enhance the PA system, improve the sightlines, and, whilst retaining the historic box pews, address the uncomfortable seating. We believe that with these sensitive improvements, Down Cathedral will be equipped in the best possible way to fulfil its unique calling as a centre of worship and a historical landmark.

It may seem odd, or even wrong, to put money into buildings at a time when there is such social need, but, in my view, the two things go together, rather than being opposed to each other. Indeed, it is good to see the church providing work for those in the construction industry at a time of serious recession.

It would be a great pity if the work on the nave could not be completed soon after, so that the whole building reflects the glory and life–giving grace of the Lord to those who worship and come as pilgrims to hear of the faith we proclaim.

Please, as parishes, rise to this appeal this year in your giving.
