New Chancellor for Dromore Cathedral

Congratulations to the current Prebendary of Dromara, Canon Robert Howard, on being made Chancellor of the Chapter of Dromore Cathedral.

There are six stalls in Dromore Cathedral occupied by the Prebendary of Dromara, the Treasurer, the Precentor, the Chancellor, the Archdeacon and Dean. In the past each canon moved up a seat as each stall became vacant, but for the last ten years or so the new canons are placed in the Prebendary, Treasurer or Precentor’s stall, whichever is vacant, and upon a vacancy in the Chancellor’s stall, one of these three canons is ‘promoted’.

Canon Robert Howard, who has been on the chapter for almost six years, has served as Prebendary during that time. This role brings with it the minuting of Chapter meetings which take place three times a year. He hands over this responsibility to Revd Gareth Harron whose appointment to the chapter was announced earlier this week.

The Chancellor’s position is traditionally associated with a legal role but has no longer any duties associated with it. There is no connection with the role of Chancellor at Diocesan Synod meetings.

Often parishioners thing this ‘promotion’ means they will lost their rector, or that he or she will get a rise in pay. Neither of these is the case which is good news for parishes so honoured!

A date for the service of installation will be announced in due course.
