Helen Roseveare to be interviewed at ‘First Things’ Conference

Internationally renowned missionary, speaker and author, Dr Helen Roseveare, will be interviewed at the ‘First Things’ Conference evening celebration on Saturday 21 April.

Helen, a parishioner of St Elizabeth’s Dundonald, went to the Congo in 1953 through WEC International where she practiced medicine and trained others in medical work. She remained in the country throughout the infamous Simba Rebellion – a hostile and dangerous period of political instability in the early 1960s. In 1964 she was taken prisoner and for five months endured beatings and rape at the hands of the rebel forces. She left for England but in 1965 returned to pick up her medical missionary work.

Helen finally left Africa in 1973 and since then, she has spoken and written for an international audience.

Organised jointly by the Church of Ireland Evangelical Fellowship, New Wine Ireland, the Evangelical fellowship of Irish Clergy and Reform Ireland, First Things is open to all and is an exciting opportunity for members of the Church of Ireland and of other denominations to come together to celebrate and affirm the essentials of evangelical faith in the 21st century, and to grapple with some of the unique challenges of our increasingly pluralist and secular society.

The two keynote speakers will be the former Bishop of Rochester, the Rt Revd Michael Nazir–Ali, who is now President of the Oxford Centre for Training, Research, Advocacy and Dialogue (OXTRAD), and the Bishop of Argentina, the Rt. Rev Greg Venables, formerly Primate of the Southern Cone.
