St Gall’s support trainee teachers in South Sudan

St. Gall’s Sudan Support Group recently held its annual Bridge afternoon and raised just over £1233 towards sponsorship of 2 Maridi students on a 2–year programme at Yei Teacher Training College in South Sudan.

Matata Gelma (in the brown shirt) is married and has been working as the Director for Maridi Youth Social and Economic Development Association (MYSEDA) in Maridi County. He can speak and write 4 languages and enjoys games and sports, drama, acting, preaching and teaching, reading, and listening to radio. “I take work as a positive activity and hate idleness,” says Matata.

Gabriel Commander is also married with 3 children. He worked for 9 months with the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) and in 2011 helped as a volunteer teacher for a year in a church school.

Towards the end of March, David Gough of CMSI met with the 2 students and they were genuinely grateful for the support of St Gall’s and were looking forward to 2 year’s hard work and training in Yei.

In the past, the parishioners of St Gall’s have been able to fund; a borehole providing clean water, school classrooms and tutoring for students, clinical/medical aid, Mother’s Union sewing and knitting tuition, micro–finance projects, and the provision of glasses.

The total cost of their commitment to Matata and Gabriel will be £8000 but at the end of 2 years there will be a significant impact as more children in Maridi receive a much needed education.
