Olympic rower speaks to a packed hall in Waringstown
Crave Youth Fellowship in Waringstown hosted Olympic silver medallist Richard Chambers at a packed youth event on Saturday 22 September.
Over 200 young people came together to hear Richard share his testimony and to worship God in music with the Ryan Griffiths’ Band.
“It was refreshing to hear Richard’s honesty,” said Waringstown rector, Revd Bryan Martin.” He shared about growing up in a Christian home, about the temptations he faced through his university years and the struggles he has with making time for his own Christian discipleship.
“We were also delighted to have the Mayor of Craigavon, Councillor Carla Lockhart, and our local MLA, Jo–anne Dobson, with us,” Bryan continued.
Richard, who began rowing at the age of 15, also shared about his love for Eastenders, (he and his wife Abi like watching it, because life couldn’t get more depressing than Eastenders) and about where he keeps his Olympic silver medal – in his pants drawer (although Abi was quick to mention that she has washed them!).
Richard and his brother Peter are from Coleraine and were proud to be part of Team GB at this year’s London Olympics. They won their silver in the lightweight men’s four and were the first brothers to row together in a senior Team GB boat since the Barcelona Olympics in 1992.
He is a two–time world champion, who competed in the Beijing Olympics four years ago.
