Royal British Legion at Killinchy Parish Church

The Royal British Legion took part in the Service of Remembrance at Killinchy Parish Church on Remembrance Sunday. The church was packed as the large congregation gathered to remember and give thanks for those who served in two worlds wars and other conflicts throughout the world. It was particularly poignant given the 25th Anniversary of the Enniskillen Poppy Day bombing.

The Rector, Revd Stanley Gamble, welcomed the Killyleagh and Killinchy branch to the service and commended them for their work with military personnel and their families. After two minutes silence, the last post was sounded, and wreaths were laid on behalf of the Parish and the Royal British Legion.

In his sermon, Revd. Gamble said “We gather with somber hearts as we think of all those men and women who died in the service of their country and the Crown, who gave up their lives so that we could enjoy freedom in our own lives.” Referring to the recent murders of David Black and Channing Day, he encouraged the congregation to keep their families in their prayers. And he said that “Two centuries on, we still need to hear the message of peace from Jesus Christ” and “to do good in our communities.”

Cllr Terry Andrews was in attendance. He said “The service was very inspirational and moving. It brought home to me the price that these brave men and women paid by sacrificing their lives in war and campaigns since 1914 making sure by doing so that we would enjoy the freedoms that we take for granted! It was even more poignant with the recent funeral in Comber of Cpl Day who died during the course of active duty in Afghanistan with her family and many more before plunged into mourning and despair with the tragic loss of a loved one. Remembrance Sunday is all about remembering those who gave their tomorrow for our today – lest we forget.”
