Tullylish celebrates 150 years

Sunday 28 October 2012 was a massive occasion in the life of All Saints’ Church, Tullylish, Diocese of Dromore, as it celebrated the 150th Anniversary of its consecration.

The Rector of the Parish, The Revd Arthur Young conducted the service mindful of the atmosphere and events of that first service 150 years ago. The special guest and preacher was Lord Robin Eames, OM, former Archbishop of Armagh.

It was on 30 October 1862 the Church was consecrated and dedicated to “All Saints” by the Revd Robert Knox, Bishop of Down, Connor and Dromore. Prior to this on 15th March 1861, the foundation/commemorative stone was laid in the presence of over 2,000 people and local dignitaries.

The Parish of Tullylish can trace its roots to early Christian times and is mentioned in an old document in the Annals of Ulster – 804 AD. There is evidence too that “Tullach Lis” was a Hill Fort in Fortified Rath from 600 – 700 AD and a monastic site from the 12th – 14th centuries.

The first church was built in 1522, destroyed in 1641 and rebuilt in 1698. In spite of improvements and additions the church became inadequate for worship and plans were made for a new building. The 1859 Revival had an impact on the spiritual life of the parish – church attendance was greatly increased – and the new church was assured of a committed and motivated congregation.

A booklet entitled “A Sure Foundation,” has been written by a parishioner Isabel Whiteside and contains many interesting facts about the Church and the Parish.
