Happy Anniversary Shankill!

Shankill Church, Lurgan, was consecrated 150 years ago on 8 May and the parish has just marked the anniversary with a weekend of celebrations.

On Saturday 4 May, the church was open from 11.00 am–3.00 pm and many people dropped in for refreshments and to view the beautiful historic church.

Mr Sammy Malcolm, a member of Shankill Parish and a local historian, gave guided tours and reflections on the building and its role in shaping the history and lives of people of Lurgan.

Over the past number of years extensive work has been carried out on the church spire and more recently on the bell tower. ‘Before and after’ photographs of the work were on display.

The 150th celebrations of worship and witness continued with a celebration service on Sunday morning 5 May. The guest speaker at this service was former Rector, Revd Dr Maurice Elliott, now Director of the Church of Ireland Theological Institute.

“The service will long be remembered in Shankill. Such a special day,” said parishioner, Heather Clarke.

“Balloons and birthday cake adorned our welcome area (the vestibule) as everyone arrived for the service. Afterwards over 400 people stayed after church for a picnic lunch which due to the weather had to be eaten in church. It was a bit manic for the catering team who did a fantastic job with patience, smiles and lashings of fresh cream! Whilst the adults had their food, the kids enjoyed face painting, balloon modelling and a treasure hunt organised by the Romanian team.

It was great to catch up with Maurice, Kirsten and the children and to renew friendships.

All in all a wonderful day of celebration, fellowship and thankfulness.

Our service ended with the hymn, “To God be the glory great things he has done”.

“”Amen! to that!” say the people of Shankill Parish.”
