Enough Food for Everyone – The G8 decide

Tearfund reflects on the response from G8…

We’ve been praying and campaigning for this, in our churches, our schools, our communities and in Hyde Park and Belfast Botanic Gardens. The G8 is the best point we have for world leaders to decide to do what we’re asking.

They heard us loud and clear. The summit communique included many things the IF Campaign called for, and it’s a fine set of commitments, more than we expected when we began. But there’s a lot of unfinished business too. There’s not enough detail yet about how these good commitments will happen in practice, and the details matter.

A step in the right direction

On tax dodging, the commitment to start exchanging tax information automatically for both rich and poor countries – so it’s not secret any more – is great, but we need a clear timeline for when it will happen.

Land grabs were on the G8’s agenda for the first time, which was good, and some useful partnerships were agreed, but far more is needed.

They committed to keep the promise of $100 billion a year to help poor countries adapt to climate change, but again failed to say where it’ll come from.

So the pressure we brought to bear will help some of the 1 in 8 people going hungry, but not yet enough.
