Tom Wright’s New Testament translation for Bishop’s Bible Week

During the Bishop’s Bible Week the scripture passages will be read from Tom Wright’s 2011 translation, ‘The New Testament for Everyone’.

Tom is  a leading New Testament scholar and was the Bishop of Durham in the Church of England from 2003 until his retirement in 2010. He is currently Research Professor of New Testament and Early Christianity at St Mary’s College, University of St Andrews in Scotland. The diocese was privileged to welcome him as their speaker at the clergy conference in 2010.

The text of the New Testament, drawn from the New Testament for Everyone series, is an accurate rendering of the Greek original. It also represents Tom Wright’s view of the New Testament, something that has helped to shape his theology.

This volume and others will be on special offer from the Good Book Shop stall at the Bible Week.

From the back cover

Why another translation of the New Testament? As Tom Wright points out in his Preface: ‘Translating  the New Testament is something that each generation ought to be doing, just as Jesus taught us to pray for our daily bread we can never simply live on yesterday’s bread, on the interpretations and translations of previous generations.’

‘Professor Wright’s concern is that scripture should be something that everyone can read understand and enjoy. Without scripture, how can we know the mind and heart of our loving God? So this renowned biblical scholar has undertaken a tremendous task: to produce a modern and accessible version of the New Testament. He has drawn together the translations of scripture from his ‘For Everyone’ guides to make a seamless whole. Broken up into easy–to–read, bite–sized chunks and illustrated throughout with clear helpful maps, this is a new rendering of ancient wisdom that can be read like a novel, studied in sections or used as an aid to daily devotion.’

Reviews of the ‘For Everyone’ Series

N. T. Wright has undertaken a tremendous task: to provide guides to all the books of the New Testament, and to include in them his own translation of the entire text. Each short passage is followed by a highly readable discussion, with background information, useful explanations and suggestions, and thoughts as to how the text can be relevant to our lives today. A glossary is included at the back of the book. The series is suitable for group study, personal study, or daily devotions.

The ‘For Everyone’ series of commentaries ought to be on the shelves of every preacher and indeed everyone who takes their Bible seriously… Wright has a knack of wearing his learning lightly, but displaying enough of it to give the reader confidence that he knows what he’s talking about…He writes from a genuinely pastoral heart and with a deep conviction that the Bible is God’s word for us today, not just a historical puzzle for dusty academics.

Baptist Times

The translation is uniformly clear and engaging… It is hard to imagine any Christian reader or preacher who would not benefit from these volumes.

Expository Times

Wright writes wonderfully, accessibly and as smooth as fine chocolate.
