Recollections of South Sudan – a nation in crisis

As civil conflict stalks South Sudan, David Bainbridge, Tearfund’s International Director, recalls his personal experience of a region in the grip of crisis:

“It was in South Sudan that I met some of the most malnourished children I’ve ever seen. In a Tearfund feeding centre, which was a tent in a remote field miles away from anywhere, during one of the many famines to hit the country, we gave food to severely malnourished children.  

I saw a mother with her young twins who were so hungry they were fighting to stay alive.  I have twins, who live with me and my wife here in London, so that was one of the most poignant moments of my working life…”

A prayer for South Sudan

Almighty God,

Who alone can turn for good the days that are gone and the days that are done.

Remove from our memory the ills of the years that are past and the wrongs that were suffered, that we may reach out to the years ahead and the time when thy will is done on earth as it is in heaven
