Bible Society responds in Nepal

We have learned over the past days of the impact of Saturday’s earthquake which was centred no more than 75 miles west of the Nepalese capital, Kathmandu. Already, the death toll is numbered in thousands.

Nepal is a country with many challenges, given the mountainous terrain and difficult communications. The widespread effects of this tragedy will have a huge impact on the 27 million people who live there.

While the Government and International Aid agencies seek to respond to the immediate physical needs of the population, the Bible Society of Nepal is planning how they can best minister to the spiritual needs of the people worst affected. Fewer than 2% of Nepalese people are Christian as this is a predominantly Hindu country, However, Tej Jirel and his team will be distributing Scripture widely to survivors, irrespective of their religious background.

Here are some Prayer suggestions for you to use in the coming days. Pray for:

  • Those who have been bereaved so suddenly, or have had family members injured.

  • The tens of thousands of families who have witnessed widespread destruction of their homes and some of their cultural heritage.

  • The huge rescue effort to reach many isolated communities; there have been fatalities caused by avalanches as far from the epicentre as Everest base camp.

  • The efforts of Bible Society staff to reach as many people as possible with spiritual encouragement and copies of Scripture in their heart language in the days and weeks ahead.

  • The Gospel to touch the hearts of many people so that, out of this tragedy, many lives might be touched and changed.
