South Sudan. Hope and Sorrow

In 2015, the Bible Society in South Sudan distributed more Bibles than in any year since it was founded. Perhaps this is as a result of the ongoing fighting which has caused people to seek hope? It may be partly due to improved logistics in bringing Scripture into the country. Whatever the reasons, great numbers are seeking God’s Word. Distribution and literacy also complement each other.

The Bible is the standard textbook in literacy classes as the main reason for promoting literacy is to help people to read the Bible. We thank the Lord for the desire to own and read His Word. Please pray for each person receiving Scripture, may the Spirit reveal much to their hearts.

Please pray, especially for the Zande translation team in in South Sudan. Work came to an abrupt halt when the Zande community living in Yambio was targeted in ethnic violence in the middle of last year. Since then, life in Yambio has become extremely dangerous. Paul, who leads the Zande team, explained the dangers facing the residents of Yambio and requested prayer for their safety. He had to flee with his family, spending a week sleeping outside on palm branches, with barely any food and only dirty water.

“Please, I ask you to continue to remember us in your prayers. If I had money, I would have taken my children to the refugee camp in Uganda where they can stay safe…”

Life is unbelievably tough and this team are not safe. Pray for the protection of Almighty God and for His provision.
