The Bible Society at work in Syria – hope in a war zone

It is so hard to imagine living in a war zone, finally being forced to flee into the unknown in a desperate effort to keep your loved ones alive. Yet more than 5 million people have left Syria and over 7 million have been displaced inside the country.

In the midst of the turmoil, the small Bible Society team has continued to run their four Centres. The main Bible House is still in open six days a week in one of the most unstable urban centres! The team can somehow function for weeks on end without electricity or internet. Communication is extremely tricky, yet this is ‘normal’ for the people still living in a city that has lost 60% of its population in just 3 years. So far the Bible House has been protected although destruction is all around. Each staff member has witnessed shells falling, yet their lives have been spared. The team continue to print tens of thousands of Scripture Calendars which are distributed all over the country.  Hundreds and hundreds of boxes with Bibles, Children’s Bibles, Gospel Portions and Spiritual Books were sent to all parts of the country for Christmas activities with large groups of displaced Syrians.

The team leader writes:

“As we see our country fall apart we rejoice that so many of us receive strength each morning from Him who loves the people of Syria more than any of us do… we continue travelling across check–points wondering what new ‘surprise’ there might be every time. But, we continue and work is going on in a beautiful way. We certainly are happy to be right here and wonder what the future holds for our beloved Syria.”

Pray for this faithful team witnessing at great risk in Syria.
