Much needed Vaseline reaches Maridi

In January, Jane Corbett and Nina Coffey visited our link diocese of Maridi in South Sudan and spent time with some of the burns victims of the terrible oil tanker fire.

Impressive counselling work was being carried out by ladies in the MU but Jane and Nina reported that many victims had no ointment with which to lubricate their skin. Lubrication is vital to recovery and particularly in facilitating a full range of movement in damaged limbs.

We have just heard the good news that Vaseline ordered by CMSI has reached Maridi. Bishop Justin has been in touch and he will be making efforts hand it over to the MU who will then distribute it with advice, to those who are most in need.

“We added in a bar of soap for each of the people receiving the Vaseline at Bishop Justin’s request, said CMSI Partnership Coordinator, Linda Abwa. “Bishop Tandema will receive some of the shipment for Olo, where the MU will soon run a nine day trauma healing workshop for folks involved in the fire.”

A fruitful partnership

Now in its 17th year, Down and Dromore’s link with Maridi Diocese in South Sudan is part of a unique concept of mission across three continents. We, together with Albany Diocese share in mission with the Church in South Sudan through CMS Ireland.

The following parishes in our diocese are particularly active in the partnership link:

  • Dromore Cathedral

  • Donaghadee

  • Holywood

  • Annalong

  • Killaney and Carryduff

  • Kilwarlin

  • Movilla Abbey

  • Comber

  • St Gall’s

Bishop Justin, his team in Maridi and CMSI say a huge thank you. In partnership in 2015 we were able to:

  • Support the diocese in constructing 6 pastors’ houses

  • Sponsor 5 clergy in training (Africa Renewal University and Chaima Institute)

  • Invest in agriculture (Maridi Demonstration Farm and training courses)

  • Provide shelter, food and schooling for internally displaced people

  • Support girls’ education at Haddow and medical work at Bethsaida Clinic

Please continue to pray for South Sudan.
