Bishop shocked and saddened by racist attack on pregnant woman

Bishop Harold has expressed his shock at sadness following an attack on the East Belfast home of a pregnant Sudanese woman.

He said: “I was deeply shocked to hear today of the attack on the home of a defenceless pregnant Sudanese woman and her family in East Belfast.

“It is vital at a time like this that ordinary people state firmly that this is not acceptable in any way. Sadly, there have been several such attacks, giving the impression of parts of Belfast being unsafe for refugees from other countries.

“This is not the kind of society which we want to develop. One of the key faith values we embrace is of welcome and care for the refugee.”

Pointing  out that “Jesus Christ himself was a refugee”, the Bishop added: “The background, skin–colour or religion of another person makes absolutely no difference at their point of need.

“My prayer is that this family will stay in Northern Ireland, that those who know them will rally around them, and that ‘Amina’s’ baby will be born safely.”
