Knockbreda’s ‘Faithful Delivery’ of 300 cream teas

Linda Butterwick from Knockbreda Parish was inspired when she read that BRF’s Anna Chaplaincy was distributing afternoon cream teas for VE Day.

She thought it would be a lovely thing to do for the elderly and housebound in Knockbreda, especially as we emerged from lockdown.

As the idea grew to include every member of the parish, all of whom had, after all, spent lockdown at home, Linda had no difficulty getting the support of the rector and a team of helpers.

The ‘Faithful Delivery’ as it became known was a gift, a treat, and a thank you to God for bringing the parish family through a testing few months.

After three weeks of planning and delegation, 300 ‘Faithful Deliveries’ were made to parishioners and some neighbours. About 60 people worked together to make it happen: 25 bakers produced identical scones and pre-wrapped them in twos; a couple of people patiently inscribed cards with greetings and a blessing; a team of four put all the bags together in the hall (complete with jam and cream) and 30 volunteers made the deliveries on 26 June.

Every meeting and every step involved social distancing and the strictest of hygiene measures, but the team did enjoy getting to see each other after several months of isolation.

“It was a completely positive experience, backed up with prayer” says Linda, who is quick to credit everyone who helped. “We deliberately involved all ages, especially in the actual deliveries. Quite a few of our older recipients remarked how lovely it was to have young people arrive at their door and the rector’s phone and inbox were flooded with thank yous.

“People were really grateful to know that their Knockbreda church family was thinking about them.”
