Death of Revd Canon George Mitchell

It is with sadness that we announce the death this morning of Revd Canon George Mitchell. Canon Mitchell was a former rector of Bangor, St Comgall’s and he retired into Down and Dromore.

George Mitchell was ordained in 1946 and served two curacies in the Diocese of Connor – St Matthew’s Belfast (1946–48) and Ballymoney (1948–51). He had a brief spell as a Curate in Charge with St Anne’s Cathedral before being appointed to the incumbency of Broomhedge in 1952.

George left Broomhedge in 1959 to become rector of Carrickfergus where he remained until his appointment to Bangor in 1970. In 1978 he became a Canon of St Anne’s Cathedral, Belfast, and in 1988 he retired.

Our prayers and sincere condolences go to Canon Mitchell’s family. Funeral arrangements are not yet known.
