Bible Course ‘brings the Word alive’

There’s been a very positive response to the first Diocesan Bible Course which is running on Tuesday evenings in St Donard’s, Bloomfield.

Thirty–eight people from around the diocese have enrolled for Module One, an overview of the New Testament, and the class has just completed 6 weeks out of the 10.

“We’ve been really really enjoying it – really enjoying going through the Bible, said one couple. “We are ‘newbies’ in the faith and Josh has really brought the Word alive.”

The course is being taught by Josh Hooker, a Crosslinks Mission Partner who is on secondment to the diocese. Josh has been teaching the Bible in southern Africa for the past 17 years and is currently involved in teaching and training in Down and Dromore.

The sessions are interactive with students free to ask questions and share their own thoughts on what’s being taught. The chat continues during the coffee break!

Josh brings a strong devotional aspect to the material and has set time aside for group work.

“We stop to talk about some verses together because the danger of an overview is that you don’t read the Bible at all. My hope is that people taking the course make that connection between the text and their lives and that they love God’s word even more at the end of it.”

It seems that the course is hitting the mark. Here’s what some of the current students had to say:

“Josh has been amazing, and we’ve been learning things that after all these years you thought you knew but he puts it very simply, very clearly and it’s just brilliant.”

“I think the course is very interesting – the background and so forth to each of the four gospels is very interesting. I think it would be of great benefit to people who are looking to start to actually get to know the Bible.”

The modules are stand–alone so you can pick up the course for the first time with Module 2: Knowing Noah from Nathan. An overview of the Old Testament. It runs from 4 October–6 December in St Donard’s, Bloomfield.
