Moira parishioners offer 300 Acts of Service

As part of their 300th anniversary celebrations, parishioners of St John’s Moira will be busy carrying out 300 Acts of Service in their locality between April and December.

It’s a way of giving back to the Moira community and involving them in the celebrations which also include 300 Hours of Prayer and 300 Hours of Praise during Holy Week.

Leaflets have already been distributed across the parish inviting people to phone in or email their requests.

“Once we receive the requests, we’ll put out an appeal for parishioners to do the job”, explains the rector, Revd Joanne Megarrell. “And as the disciples were sent out two by two, we’ll send out our volunteers in pairs if they’re doing odd jobs in people’s homes.”

Examples of the help on offer include garden maintenance, doing small grocery shops, runs to the recycling centre and small DIY tasks.

Joanne continues:

“We also wanted to mark Holy Week in this special way this year, so we are aiming to have 300 hours of people praying in their own homes and to sing 300 songs of praise during Holy Week and beyond.

“Praising God and praying is part of our DNA, and these will be special times engaging in prayer and praise to God for what He has done over 300 years of worship in Moira. But praise and prayer need to lead to action and that is why we are going out into the community to offer these small ‘acts of service’.

“It is my prayer that as God’s people engage with our community that they would ‘Speak Jesus’ in the homes where they are doing practical deeds. I also pray that the community will see that we care for them and that when they find themselves in a ‘tough spot’, they might just think of ‘the wee church on the hill’ in Moira, who offered them help before.”
